National Animal Shelter & Rescue Appreciation Week takes place each year during the first week of November and was created to encourage people to learn more about their local shelters, what they do to help animals and ways that they can help.

DFWHS, a 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter, rescues an average of 900 unwanted and neglected pets each year and provides food, shelter, vaccinations, daily care, and socialization for those animals until they find a forever home. Nationwide, an estimated 6.5 million animals enter shelters each year; plus, many animal owners find themselves in need of the services provided by local shelters, such as pet food assistance programs that can help keep a pet in the home by providing pet food during financial hardships.

In 2018, Virbac Corporation launched The Every Pet Project, formerly “The Every Dog Project,” to make donations to nonprofit animal welfare organizations. Awardees are nominated by veterinary professionals, pet owners, and pet lovers alike. Each month, two randomly-selected organizations receive $2,500 to support them in their valuable work.

Francois Fournier, CEO of Virbac North America, explained the thinking behind the donations: “The Every Pet Project will help us do more for the communities we serve and enable us to improve the quality of care for pets that need it the most.”

To nominate your favorite animal charity, there are several simple ways to do it: Text PETS to 80160, or click here to nominate online. It only takes a few seconds!

Cinnamon adopted by Alex and Emily on 06/30/2020

We had been wanting another addition to our fur family and it felt like fate that we came across Cinnamon at the perfect time. We were told that she had came to the shelter a few times before as a stray, and was claimed by a family. She then got out and was in a incident (possibly hit by a car) in which she had to have her leg amputated. When we met her and saw how sweet she was, we fell in love with her right away. And we were so happy we got her!

She has been adjusting to her furever home SO well. She has gotten stronger and gets around pretty quickly despite being down one leg. She manages to find a way to still jump onto our bed to snuggle with us in the mornings. She gets along perfectly with her sister Shiloh, who she gets to wrestle AND snuggle with whenever she likes. She has been the perfect addition to our family and has brought so much warmth and love. Adopting Cinnamon was one of the best decisions we have made, and she will be with us furever!

Muffin adopted by Sheryl on 06/11/2017

We came back to Texas from Albuquerque NM to visit my parents. My dad was very sick. We visited shelter looking for a schnauzer to take the place of our dear Lexie who passed of cancer. We found Muffin. We call her Muffy Vanderdog as she is our superhero. She’s been a 505 doggie ever since. We love her with all of our hearts and we are thankful for y’all letting us adopt her knowing she would be relocated to New Mexico! She’s our family now and she’s doing great! She loves New Mexico and the mountains we live at the foothills and she chases little lizards and plays with our other 2 rescue fur babies. They all get along and have a great life together. Thanks again for all y’all do!

Kaia (formerly known as Molly) adopted by Cassondra on 11/16/2019

Originally when we came to the shelter, we left with a different dog. Unfortunately, she wasn’t the right fit for us. When we had to return her, we met Kaia. I did not want to get another dog because I loved the first one. However, Kaia stole our hearts. The people at the shelter were amazing with helping us find the right fit. I cannot imagine our lives without this beautiful, sweet, amazing girl. I wanted to share this story just incase someone else doesn’t get it right the first time. She even has a “little” brother now. Thank you to everyone at the shelter!
